THE PRISONER’S SONG
Inspired by real life events experienced by close friends and family of this project's creative team, 'The Prisoner's Song' follows two days in the life of an American prisoner, one during his time incarcerated and one as a free man, providing an observational view of the issues within the American prison system. The creative team and I, all of us composed of undergraduate students at The University of Texas, worked tirelessly to effectively tell the story of an underrepresented group of Americans in the United States, whose current depiction in popular media is skewed towards being portrayed as completely immoral and hyper masculine individuals, when the reality is that many of these individuals who served time are no different than us, struggling day to day to adjust to a society that doesn't want them.
Featuring "The Prisoner's Song", written by a prisoner during the mid 1920's and then stolen by Vernon Dalhart to become the first song in America to sell nearly 1.3 million copies.
